New artist deisplay at our Albert Road salon art space

Robert Knox - Artist statement

Current work

The bringing to life of the everyday and inanimate objects is a theme in my work that I have repeatedly returned to. By attributing them with human characteristics it has in turn given birth to many ficticious creatures that are part of this world and the imaginary. Creating these strange beings is what fuels my work and inspires my passion for my practise.

For me this particular painting marks a shift into a more gracious and less restrictive process of creating art. I realised that I wanted the works to be more spontaneous and less precious in terms of mark making and the surface I was working on. This lead to the use of materials such as cardboard instead of canvas, allowing the material to behave how it wanted rather than needing to have complete control over it. I no longer needed the perfect flat surface of a canvas. I could also be free fron concern over unplanned marks or dirtying of the material!

My influences

My influences for my work are Pop art, Street art, outsider art, comic books and illustration. Artists that I find predominantly inspiring are Keith Haring, Chapman Brothers, Michael Craig Martin, Jeff Koons and street artists Ericalcane and Blu.

Where I work

Having recently graduated July 2011 in Fine Art at Portsmouth University I have had the fortune to be able to continue my practise with a studio at Art Space Portsmouth studios, Brougham Road, Southsea, from September last year
